1. The Fool's Mate (2-Move Checkmate)

1. The Fool's Mate (2-Move Checkmate) The Fool's Mate is the shortest possible checkmate in chess. It can only happen to White if they play extremely weak, self-destructive moves right from the start. The Moves: f3? e5 g4?? Qh4# (Checkmate!) Why it happens: White moves the pawns in front of their King (f3 and g4), which fatally opens up the diagonal leading straight to the King. Black's Queen slides out to h4, delivering an inescapable checkmate because the White King has nowhere to run and no pieces can block or capture the Queen.
