Controlling the center of the board.
Controlling the center of the board is the cornerstone of chess strategy. The four central squares (e4, d4, e5, and d5) are critical for several reasons:
Maximum Mobility and Influence: A piece placed in or controlling the center radiates power across the entire board. For example, a knight sitting on a central square can jump to 8 different squares, whereas a knight trapped on the edge of the board (like a4) can only reach 4. Centralized pieces are simply more active and efficient.
Faster Expansion and Attack: Because the center acts as a highway between the kingside and queenside, controlling it allows you to shift your forces rapidly to wherever they are needed mostโwhether that is defending your own king or launching an attack on your opponent's.
Restricting the Opponent: If you control the center, your opponent's pieces are forced to the edges or crammed into cramped spaces where they bump into each other and cannot move freely.
Creating Space: Controlling the center gives your army breathing room. Without central influence, your pieces will be suffocated behind your own pawns, making it impossible to coordinate an attack.
